A woman in her 20s was assaulted on a footbridge between Newton Street and Farewell Street near Shaw's supermarket in Waltham on Sunday, July 30 around 8 p.m., according to the Massachusetts State Police.
The victim heard footsteps behind her and was then grabbed from behind by someone who tried to put his hand over her mouth. She screamed and tried to escape, and the man then let her go and ran away.
The woman turned and saw the man running away. She described him as a man in his 30s or 40s, with tan skin, average height, and an athletic build. He was wearing a baseball cap.
Waltham police and Massachusetts State Police searched the area but did not find the suspect.
Police urge the public to be aware of their surroundings and any other people who may be near them in public spaces. People are also encouraged to carry a cell phone, refrain from wearing headphones, and consider carrying pepper spray.
Police encourage anyone who may be assaulted to scream, make noise, and fight back.
Police are actively investigating the assault.
